Education

Hingham children attend the schools of the town-run Hingham School District. Comprised of one high school, one middle school and four elementary schools, in addition to four private schools, Hingham schools are noted for their diversity and top notch curricula. Hingham is also home to South Shore Conservatory, whose motto reads “Enriching lives through the arts.” This remarkable institution is known for its strong music and dance programs. Four private and parochial schools are also ready to serve the educational needs of students in Hingham: Saint Paul’s School, Notre Dame Academy, Derby Academy, and Old Colony Montessori School.

A number of higher educational institutions thrive in the Hingham area as well. In Quincy, Quincy College is known for its wide variety of academic subjects and open enrollment policy. Simmons College, an all-girls liberal arts college in Boston, is noted for its strong liberal arts core and low student to faculty ration (12:1.) Boston itself is home to over seventy universities, with some of the biggest including Harvard, Berklee School of Music, and Boston University.

Attractions

There are a number of cultural attractions for one to explore in Hingham. Some of the most popular include the Hingham Symphony Orchestra and the Hingham Civic Music Theatre. Both are applauded for their splendid shows that take place throughout the year.

The Bare Cove Fire Museum is a hot spot among locals and visitors alike. This unusual museum holds the exciting development of firefighting equipment through the years in New England. The museum itself includes an extraordinary collection of artifacts, equipment, and documents, along with the restored antique fire apparatus.

The Hingham Historical Society is a perfect site for any history buff. This educational society holds a number of events every year to promote the heritage of Hingham. A few of the classes that have been offered have included Chinese Brush Painting, a Mosaic Workshop and Sculpting. Some previous exhibits have included Northwestern artists, local artists and National Juried Shows. Every year, the gallery also holds an Arts Festival which celebrates art in a variety of media.

Parks and Recreation

There are a number of parks and recreational activities in Hingham. Bear Cove Park is a popular spot for locals and visitors alike. Set across 469 acres along the banks of the Weymouth River, this lovely park serves as a wildlife sanctuary. It is not unusual for one to see coyotes, foxes and deer roaming the parks many wetlands, dense woods and open fields. The park is an ideal spot for walking, bicycling and peaceful meditation.

Golf lovers will absolutely adore the South Shore Country Club. This elegant course features a challenging 18-hole course, as well as a 10-lane candle pin bowling alley, three tennis courts, an outdoor swimming pool and a fine restaurant. The entire club itself is renowned for its luxurious nature and applauded for its fantastic service.

For nature lovers, Wompatuck State Park is a wilderness paradise. This stunning park holds 262 wooded campgrounds, 12 miles of bicycle paths, and many miles of wooded paths and hiking trails. One of the most popular aspects of the park is Mt. Blue Spring which is a noted spot for its fresh drinking water.
